The Experiment Worked. Fighting & Faith Spreading.
Jim Wagner
For two decades warriors (law enforcement officers, military personnel, private security guards, and martial artists) had driven for miles and kilometers, or flew in from faraway places, to attend my Jim Wagner Reality-Based Personal Protection courses in 20 countries. It was expensive for them, but I was providing training they couldn’t get anywhere else; not unless they were fortunate enough to have had the training I received: U.S. Army Boot Camp, working in a jail, attending the police academy, working on the streets To Protect and Serve as a cop, SWAT school and SWAT call outs, U.S. Marine Scout Sniper School, counterterrorism school with the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) then fighting the Global War on Terrorism, providing Executive Protection for government officials and celebrities, and being able to study firsthand the techniques and tactics of the world’s elite as an instructor they wanted: German counterterrorism GSG 9, Argentinean GOE, Brazilian GATE, the Finnish Police Academy, the U.S. Secret Service, the Green Beret, FBI, London Metropolitan Police, and many more. Honestly, it has felt like I lived 100 lives. Then in 2018 I decided that technology had advanced far enough to start providing online courses for those who could not attend my in-person. As much as I was travelling to different countries to meet the demand, it was still not enough. Thousands of good people simply could not attend for a lot of reasons, especially those who could not afford it. However, to my surprise, my efforts to offer courses over the Internet was a complete failure.
Me (on the left) with several of my students of the Special Anti-Crime Unit of Trinidad & Tobago (SAUTT) for a week of training
I (in the blue) am showing the Amsterdam Police instructor cadre how to survive a criminal knife attack in their training facility in Holland
An active shooter (my assistant instructor) fires upon the class with an Airsoft rifle in my Terrorism Survival course in Ravenna, Italy
There were two reasons for my failure in 2018. First, most civilian martial artists didn’t believe that they could learn self-defense with an instructor through videoconferencing, even though they had no problem watching YouTube training videos, even though finding the right instructors and real-world techniques that way is like finding a needle in a haystack. To this very day, when I am looking for specific advanced firearms training methods, it’s difficult to find exactly what I am looking for on YouTube when doing my research, especially after I have run and gunned with the best: U.S. Navy SEALS, German Federal Border Police, Spanish Foreign Legion, Los Angeles Sheriff’s, and a bunch more. Second, most martial artists just didn’t communicate using videoconferencing platforms that were available back then, unless they had to do it through their work. Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2000, lasting almost two years, and most people around the world were forced to learn how to communicate with others by the way of videoconferencing to “social distance.” It was the first time in human history that healthy people were quarantined for a virus, and many businesses not allowed to operate in-person because they were considered “non-essential.” As such, the most popular platform to emerge from this unprecedented period in history was Zoom. Their proprietary videotelephony software allowed people, for free, to meet with 100 concurrent participants with a 40-minute time limit. However, with a modest subscription fee more “bells and whistles” made remote work and distance education a reality.

Take notice of the date of this YouTube video that I posted
Before the population of United States went into sheer panic over the COVID-19 pandemic, and started emptying out all the stores for food and supplies overnight, I gave the warning that it would happen on March 12, 2020 at 11:15 a.m. (Pacific Time USA), and then posted this video five days later on YouTube. The rest is history.
Since 80% of my business was wiped out during the pandemic, for that was the percentage the accounted for my travels to foreign countries to teach my Reality-Based Personal Protection courses, I had to learn how to use Zoom as the pandemic dragged on and on. I started with some live Zoom meetings with my local Sheriff’s Department, since I am an Infrastructure Liaison Officer (ILO) through the FBI, to keep up on the latest crime trends. In California, like many parts of the United States, 2020 was filled with riots despite the shutdowns and social distancing. The next leap for me in Zoom technology was when then the Director of Security, of a church security team that I had been training prior to the shutdown, decided that Zoom training from me was better than no training at all.
2020 was the year of riots, and I personally saw a historical Junipero Serra statue removed from a city hall
The attacks on God's people wasn't just taking place in my country, but also throughout Europe
In October 2020 churches in South America were also being vandalized and burned
During the riots, in the middle of the pandemic, I was asked by various organizations to give Zoom lectures
On October 12, 2020 I was the bodyguard for General Boykin (RET.), the former commander of the U.S. Army's Delta Force
As my Zoom skills improved so did my my presentation skills, like this graphic I did for a city government
At first, I just taught subjects that required nothing more than giving lectures, but I soon realized that my firearms students could successfully follow along as I demonstrated a lot of weapons skills (of course using a cleared pistol and no ammunition anywhere near their training area), such as dealing with malfunctions during combat or Executive Protection pistol drawing techniques. It was almost as if I were in their home or office showing them in person. I wasn’t a big fan of remote learn at first, but I was warming up to the idea.
I also owed two of my French students who I certified as instructors (Alex Milick and Marie Finck, a husband-and-wife team) 1.000 euro (approximately $1,000 dollars at the time), because they had paid in advance for my airline tickets to Paris, France before COVID-19 was even known, so that I could teach a few courses for their Krav Maga school. So, when there was no end in sight for with all of the travel restrictions imposed upon those who refused to get the COVID-19 vaccines injected into their bodies, like I had refused, I finally asked Alex and Marie in an email, “Do you want a refund for the 1.000 euro or do you want Zoom lessons from me instead?” They chose the Zoom lessons, and their course choice was SURVIE DE LA FAMILLE (Family Survival). This is a very specialized course for instructors who train rich families how to avoid a kidnapping, from being mugged, counter-surveillance, home and work security, travel survival, and surviving an active shooter at school for the young children all the way up to university aged children. This decision for Alex and Marie to have me train them by way of Zoom forced me to learn the software as a host. As a student all one must do is click the Zoom link that was sent to them, before the seminar starts, and the host allows them into the meeting when it is time. Easy! But, being a host requires a lot more technical know-how. After a few private Zoom lessons with them I eventually got the hang of it.

Alex and Marie were in Paris, France and I taught them on Zoom from my location in Southern California, USA
Whether it was my own idea, or the Holy Spirit inspired me, I pondered, “Alex and Marie are learning perfectly, every Tuesday morning, what I am teaching them. I know I can do the same thing for other remote students. I don’t have to be physically in a room with my students. They just need my knowledge, demonstrations, and the ability to get their questions answered. After all, almost everyone knows how to use Zoom now.”
I was excited when these thoughts went through my head, and I immediately got to work. I sat down in my office, and I planned what the format should be, the duration of the lessons, and the pricing. I finally decided that the format was to be in two parts. For the professionals (military, law enforcement, corrections, bodyguards, bouncers, and private security) they would learn through SECURITY OPERATIONS courses every Monday, and the general public (anyone wanting to learn Reality-Based self-defense, to include beginners, or those already in the martial arts wanting to fill in the gaps in their own training) would learn through CHRISTIAN SOLDIER SELF-DEFENSE SYSTEM every Tuesday. I decided on the time frame of 20-minutes for every Live Zoom Training Course, because it’s not too long for a person with a busy life to attend, and yet not too short as to miss any important information for a particular technique or tactic. Plus, if anyone wanted any more training than that, they could take the other courses offered that week. For the price, I decided upon $15 for each SECURITY OPERATIONS course, which is the price of a sit-down lunch for an individual, and $10 for each CHRISTIAN SOLDIER SELF-DEFENSE SYSTEM course, which is the price of only two “designer coffees.” The courses are very affordable for literally the most complete self-defense system in the universe. Plus, I wanted a price where someone who knows nothing about me, or what I have been teaching to the world’s elite for over 30 years, would say to themselves, “Fifteen dollars, or ten dollars, is nothing. If I don’t like Jim, or his course, it’s not a big loss if I never do it again. But, if I like it, then it is very affordable if I want to keep taking courses with him.” Of course, when students take the Live Zoom Training Courses, then in good conscience I have no problem issuing them training certificates, because I am teaching them directly. There is some accountability.

Once I had my new business model, I let my 26,000 YouTube subscribers (at the time), and my 2,200 friends of Facebook (at the time), know that I was going to start teaching my new Live Zoom Training courses beginning with the very first one on Monday, October 10, 2022 at 8 pm (Pacific Time USA). It was for SECURITY OPERATIONS, and the title of the course was NEUTRALIZING A GUNMAN IN THE MIDDLE OF A CROWD. It’s a task that, sadly, most church security agents don’t know how to do properly, and that’s exactly why I started off with this course. Obviously, my SWAT and counterterrorism background qualified me to teach such a course.
The first CHRISTIAN SOLDIER SELF-DEFENSE SYSTEM course I offered was the following day, Tuesday, October 11, 2022 at 7:15 pm (Pacific Time USA). It was PERSONAL SPACE THREAT ZONES followed by a second 20-minute course titled KNIFE COMBAT STANCE & 10 UNIVERSAL DIRECTIONS, which is based on me telling the world, through Black Belt Magazine two decades ago, that there are only 10 directions for any strike or block, be it empty hand or with weapons.
After teaching my first three Live Zoom Training Courses I thanked God, because people were signing up for them. The time was indeed right to teach through the Internet, and on the Zoom platform.

As I taught throughout October and November, I had two pleasant surprises I wasn’t expecting. The first surprise was that each group was international from the very start. Don Asanga Chameera, of the Elite Taekwondo Club in Sri Lanka, sent me the following text after the CLOSED FIST & OPEN HAND STRIKES course he attended on October 25th:
“Thank you, sir. I got some valuable knowledge today. It can be applied anywhere in the world. God bless you.” An American law enforcement officer (first name of Kyle), who also took the same course that evening, texted me:
“Another good training. You know, I’ve been in the martial arts for several years, and each session you bring up something that I never knew, which makes it worth the money.”
The second pleasant surprise teaching the Live Zoom Training Courses was also getting some well-known martial artists in my courses just weeks after the start up. For example, anyone who has studied, or is currently studying, Bruce Lee’s system Jeet Kune Do (JKD) knows who Burton Richardson is. After Dan Inosanto (Bruce Lee’s protégé, and both of our instructor) Burton is the “torch bearer for JKD,” and has done a great job over the past two decades promoting the system through his many seminars, videos, and books. Well, he signed up for my December 5th course titled KINETIC SENSATION RESPONSE (KSR) DRILLS, and that’s because I took some JKD/Wing Chun exercises we had been taught by Dan Inosanto and I modernized them for modern law enforcement and military combat purposes; something I have been teaching to the world's elite for over 25 years. Although the roots to what I taught on that Monday came from JKD/Wing Chun, the Kinetic Sensation Reaction Drills (Once you touch, you know) is my original material, and Burton Richardson wanted to learn it. And why not? We were both taught Bruce Lee's fighting philosophy, "Keep what is useful, and reject what is useless," not to mention that over the years we have supported each other's work. Whenever someone comes to me asking me who they should go to to learn Bruce Lee's system, I point them to Burton. Likewise, when people ask him about Reality-Based training (dealing with armed robbery, drive-by shootings, surviving terrorist attacks, chemical attacks, sniper attacks, and more, which I introduced to the martial arts community back in 1999 when I started writing for Black Belt Magazine and then for Budo International in 2000) Burton brings up my name, and has stated, "Jim has done a lot of good things for the martial arts." (a quote from one of his students, Mike DiGiovanni). So, needless to say, when I saw that Burton had registered for my Live Zoom Training Course I was delighted, not only because he is a world-known martial arts instructor, and that I was going to be teaching him, but because I truly wanted his feedback on what he thought about what I had done with some old things we had both been taught, and how "I took the ball and ran with it." After the course Burton sent me the following text:
"I love your adaptation of the Wing Chun/JKD drills to real-life scenarios. People often state that these drills do not yield good results in an MMA setting, which I agree with. But, you adapting the drills for use in arrest (law enforcement) situations, where a seemingly compliant suspect suddenly turns combative, is absolutely, as you have proven in the field (as a former police officer), effective. Great innovation. Thank you for letting me know about the workshop. Outstanding."

Since I have taught the Kinetic Sensation Response Drills to literally thousands of police officers, military personnel, private security officers, bodyguards, bouncers, and martial artists over the years, I had no doubt that he, and the other students who attended my course that night, would learn some new stuff that they could teach and apply to real-world conflict situations. After all, I have trained people from every level of the tactical spectrum, from national counterterrorist teams to children how to survive a school shooting.
Mike Kendall, a well-known self-defense instructor and first aid instructor in British Columbia, Canada, who runs Kendall Tactical Concepts, took every one of my Live Zoom Training Courses, and his feedback to me one week was:
“You put a lot of time and effort into the training sessions. I can’t wait for each course. They mean a lot to me, especially in my line of work.”

On my last three courses of 2023, (JIM WAGNER CRIMINAL CHEMICAL ATTACK RULE, JIM WAGNER MOUNTED ATTACKER 4 SQUARES RULE, and the third course was how to teach it under the new category FORCE MULTIPLIER), on Monday, December 19, 2022, I had a couple more well-known people attend them. The first was Morné Swanepoel of South Africa (combatcoaching.com). Not only is Morné one of the top MMA coaches in the world, but he’s also got a reality-based background as well: Executive Protection, he served two years on an Anti-Hijacking Unit, he served three years on an undercover unit in Hillbrow, and he was the first martial arts instructor to introduce my Jim Wagner Reality-Based Personal Protection system in his country after he I certified him as an instructor in New York City.
When I was told by my producer that Morné was one of the participants for the JIM WAGNER MOUNTED ATTACKER 4 SQUARES RULE (a training method that many MMA schools teach because of its effectiveness and simplicity to get a mounted HOSTILE off of you), I couldn’t help but pause for a second and tell the rest of the participants attending the course, “We have Morné Swanepoel with us for this course, who is one of the top MMA trainers in the world, and I know that he agrees with me on this principle (a technique I was teaching at the moment on Zoom), because we’ve taught this together in South Africa.”
After the course had ended, Morné sent me an email, and he stated the following:
“I’m amazed how much practical knowledge you can learn, and apply, from a 20-minute session. It can mean the difference between going home safely or not.”
This comment, coming from a man like him, where both of us were in grave danger together one night in the middle of Johannesburg, it was meaningful to me.

Another good surprise was having two instructors from Mexico, Chief Instructor Loth Gonzalez Brand and Rick Villanueva, of the Executive Krav Maga school in Aguascalientes. Although I have taught police units in Mexico, and also military and police units in South America, I was not expecting Spanish speakers so soon from my start up time. All of my Live Zoom Training Courses open to the public for 2022 have been in English. Loth and Rick speak English, and so they jumped onto my Zoom courses immediately. And, if you check out their website you'll see why they started taking courses from me - they are definitely REALITY-BASED, that, and Loth has been following me for 10 years on my Facebook page and YouTube, but just couldn't do an in-person course. After one of the Live Zoom Training courses Loth messaged me:
"Today we participated in the Reality-Based and Christian Soldier courses. This knowledge has helped us a lot to further improve our teaching quality in our Executive Krav Maga academy. Thank you Jim. I always wanted to learn directly from you, and now I am."
And, yet another surprise, I also had my very first student, ever, from Tanzania in East Africa, and his name is Musa Edward. He does security and executive protection, and he's also a fitness and martial arts instructor. He had been following me on YouTube. When he saw my Live Zoom Training Courses announced on my YouTube channel (jimwagnerrbpp) he signed up and attended the three courses I taught on December 19th. Musa wrote to me afterwards:
"Absolutely, these were amazing courses for me to learn new things, and to end the year 2022 with. They are useful 'reality-based' tactics for my executive protection, and for my martial arts training."
Probably the biggest surprise of all was having Christian author Mike Yorkey attend the same courses on Monday the 19th. He has written and co-authored more than 111 books, which include: The Shot Caller (having been a former jailer, this intense true story about violent gang member Casey Diaz, who turned to God in prison, really touched me), What Belief Can Do, Playing With Purpose: Tim Tebow, Fit Over 40 For Dummies, Every Young Man’s Battle (winner of an ECPA Medallion), and The Swiss Courier (nominated for a Christy Award). Well, Mike, being the author he is, not only told me how much he liked my courses, but he sent me this quote that he said that I could use on my website or anywhere else I wished to promote the courses:
“When it comes to teaching methods of self-defense, Jim Wagner is your guy. Not only is he one of the most knowledge people on the planet on protecting yourself from harm, but what he teaches you may save your life.”
I first found about Mike’s interest in my self-defense courses when he wrote me a couple years ago and told me that he not only read my book Put On The Full Combat Gear Of God, but he used it as a daily devotional. For a well-known author of his caliber to give me such a “review” was the highest compliment (the glory goes to God) that I could have received. Well, since then we have stayed in contact with each other. As a Christian writer, with his finger on the pulse of world events, Mike Yorkey sees the growing danger against not only God’s people, but everyone, and he has encouraged me to keep doing what I’m doing, and I will.
